Hamstring avulsion – PHAROS
In some cases a hamstring injury is not limited to a simple “muscle strain”, but one or more hamstring tendons is completely ruptured from the ischial bone. Such an injury may occur when the hamstrings are subjected to significant stretching or forceful pulling. A common example is a fall that results in the individual ending up in a split stance. A distinct audible “snapping” sound is often heard at the site of the injury which results in a notable bruise.
Why the Amsterdam UMC
The Amsterdam UMC, location AMC, is a centre of expertise in the treatment of hamstring avulsions. We have extensive experience in both surgical and conservative treatment of these injuries. Based on injury severity and whishes of the patient, a decision will be made whether to opt for a conservative or surgical course of treatment.
What this study adds to routine clinical care?
Hamstring avulsion injuries are relatively rare injuries. Because of this there is limited literature available regarding the speed of rehabilitation, return to sport at the pre-injury level and degrees of functionality in terms of daily living. The diagnostic and treatment pathway does not deviate from standard care. As an addition to the standard care a series of questionnaires and strength measurements will be conducted during regular follow-up consultations at the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC outpatient clinic.
How to apply for the PHAROS study?
To apply for participation, please contact one of our researchers (Kenny Lauf) to schedule an appointment at k.lauf@amsterdamumc.nl. We will make sure to schedule a consultation at the department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine of the Amsterdam UMC as soon as possible.
